What’s that in the air? A whisper of autumn magic!
The days are getting shorter, the mornings feel fresher and there’s that unmistakable smell of leaves drifting through the air. The nostalgic smell of September – the scent of going back to school. It’s the smell of sharpened pencils and new school shoes, of conker hunts and scuffing through the fallen leaves.
Autumn has arrived!

Do you remember splitting open those spiky green cases, revealing the smooth, shiny conker inside? I still feel the same joy and sense of magic now watching nature shift into her new season.
For parents, it can be a busy time with school routines and darker evenings. But it’s also a wonderful chance to slow down, notice the changes, and share them with our children.
Look out for the magic around you:

- The first conkers dropping from horse chestnut trees.
- Acorns crunching under your feet.
- Red, gold and yellow leaves swirling in the autumn breeze.
- Cobwebs glistening with morning dew.
- Birds flocking together, ready to fly to warmer places.
- Hedgehogs snuffling and preparing for their long winter sleep.

Try these fun family activities:

- Go on a fallen leaf treasure hunt. Collect as many different shapes and colours as you can, then make a collage at home.
- Bake something seasonal, like apple crumble, and talk about where the fruit comes from.
- Take a torch walk at dusk—listen carefully: can you hear an owl hoot or see bats swooping overhead?
- Look out for busy squirrels with bushy tails. Can you spot one carrying an acorn or leaping from tree to tree?
- Start a nature journal together. Draw or write down the changes you see each week.
- Go spider-web hunting on a dewy morning. How many sparkly webs can you find?
- Draw your favourite autumn treasure: a conker, a colourful leaf, or even a hedgehog getting ready for bed!
Autumn is a time of transition, reminding us of nature’s cycles —the falling leaves, the gathering animals, the planting of bulbs for spring. By noticing these changes, we celebrate the rhythm of the year and honour the cycles in our own lives. As the trees let go of their leaves, nature shows us how to let go and start again too.
It’s a time of harvest, of gathering fruits, and of planting seeds and intentions that can grow quietly through winter, ready to bloom in spring.

Autumn reminds us that change can be beautiful. It’s a season of glowing colours, crunchy footsteps, and cosy evenings—a time to share both memories and new adventures with our children and loved ones.
So, pull on your wellies, wrap up warm, and step outside.
Autumn is waiting to be explored!
What autumn treasure will you discover first?
